The Progress Of Washing Machines
Washing machines have been around for so long already that it’s hard to imagine life without them. Let’s face it; they must surely be one of the most home appliances ever invented, so it’s hardly surprising there are so many great makes to choose from nowadays. Even so, some makes and models always seem to be more popular than others, and a perfect example of this is the classic Maytag Washing Machine. For the last few decades, Maytag has consistently been producing machines that have gone on to become immensely popular between consumers. Those people who can remember watching TV during the 1970’s may recall the brilliant Maytag advertising campaign, and it is often said that this is what effectively put Maytag machines in the spotlight.
The series of commercials which ran during the 1970s and into the 1980s featured a bored repairman complaining about his job being dull due to the fact that Maytag Washing Machine never break down. The truth is that while the advertising campaign may have been a very simple one, it proved to be highly effective at persuading people Maytag only produces machines which are long lasting and reliable. Maytag sales soared as a result, and it was not only washing machine sales, but instead, all Maytag appliances became known as quality items because of the advertising campaign.
Of course the only reason why the advertising campaign was such a phenomenal success is because it was for the most part very true. If it had not been, no number of adverts would have managed to persuade generations of people to go out and purchase Maytag Washing Machines. The adverts got consumers talking, and as any manufacturer knows, word-of-mouth publicity is the most powerful of all selling tools.
The truth here is that durability is something the average person takes very seriously. Ironically, the adverts were far from serious, and they definitely focused on humorous approach in order to convince consumers. Still, no matter how fantastic an advertising campaign is, it will never successfully manage promote a product that flat out does not live up to peoples expectations. Sure it can for the short period of time, but that’s about it. The classic Maytag repairman adverts achieved more than short-term success. They delivered success that has lasted for almost 40 years.
Personal need plays a prominent role in people purchasing appliances such as washing machines. After all, people buy washing machines because they don’t like the idea of hand washing everything, and who can blame them, because it is after all a very difficult job to do. With that said; there is absolutely no demand at all for any old washing machine that’s known for breaking down or operating in an unreliable manner. Maytag Washers are not only durable, but they’re also notoriously reliable, and this is what those classic commercials promoted. Yes, there been a few modern versions of the original Maytag repairman commercials, and they have been effective, but not as big of an impact as the original commercials.
